RIP Dogs

I won't write out a long story. 127 adult dogs and puppies were put to sleep yesterday.

You can read about it on BadRap's blog. Really, pull up any APBT forum and you can read about what happened to the dogs that were confiscated in the Wildside Kennel Bust. There are also some interesting posts on this blog or this blog.

At this point, the HSUS, " Representatives of the Humane Society told the judge that the dogs should be destroyed, because they had been bred for generations to be aggressive,"and Peta are on the same page in my black book.

Did we learn nothing from the Vick case; from the Vick dogs? Why not try and evaluate them first? Why label all as dangerous without an evaluation? Sure I know the questions running thru your minds. They are probably the same questions many had when Vick was busted. Where are we going to put 157 dogs? Why these dogs when millions are dying in shelters? Who is going to pay for all this during a recession? etc.

I just don't like the ongoing label being put onto the dogs, and the assumptions being made about them. Sure, this guy who owned the yard was guilty as sin. But did the dogs ask to be put into that yard? Just because a dog is "game" doesn't mean it is HA. Most game dogs do not have once ounce of HA. Do you - Wayne, John and fellow haters, know anything concerning the history of the breed??? Wait, you and Peta both wanted the Vick dogs euthanized too. Guess I should not assume you might have learned something about APBT from the Vicotry dogs. You probably did not pay attention since your group wasn't in the positive spotlight.

Ok..enough out of me.

On a positive note, congrats to Hector, a dog from the Vick yard, who officially became a therapy dog this week.
Stick that in your fedora and smoke it HSUS.

wait...didn't I say i wasn't writing a long post - LOL

one of the woman on PBF summed it up best...
"Needless to say, I'm furious about this--Faron's stupidity, the HSUS' blatant, arrogant hypocrisy, and above all else, the loss of those dogs. The deck was stacked against them from the outset, thanks to Goodwin's sensational, fear-mongering bluster."

It's sad these dogs are euthanized. I have to say that I would agree that the majority of them probably should have been euthanized. I see no reason to euthanize newborn puppies though!!

There are so many dogs in the shelters that need rescued that it doesn't make sense to use precious resources to rehabilitate aggressive ones. Rehabilitation is possible but it is expensive and there are plenty of dogs dying that don't require extensive rehab prior to placement.

These dogs should have been evaluated without a doubt and it's been nice to hear the success of rehabilitation of the VICK dogs but It seems that Best Friends could have rescued many more dogs for the amount of money that was spent on rehabing the Vick Dogs? It seems like it's an unwise use of donated funds? That's just my opinion though.

But how do we know they were "aggressive" and needed rehabilitation? It's just judging a book by the cover....Judging a dog by it's breed?

Aggression can be HA or DA. What are we talking about here? Wait...we don't know....

There were rescues wiling to take the WSK bust dogs. But the calls and emails went unanswered.

I read what you are saying about the money, how it could have been used, and the cost to rehabilitate. I kind of understand and see your point. But I don't agree.

IMHO,I am glad they took the money and are spending it on the Vick dogs. Why not? Kennel bust dogs deserve just as much of a chance at being rescued/rehabilitated/or receiveing medical attentions as the other unwanted dogs around the USA. The positive coverage given to the breed - the people who have come to understand our breed a little more b/c we gave the Vick dogs a chance - worth every penny spent. Spend more I say!!!!!!!!!!!

I will always use my precious resources to continue to fund rehabilitation of dogs that need human help regardless of their breed, their physical issues or mental issues. o

Ok..step off your soap box there Ann. Sorry about that. I guess I am just filled with a little too much emotion. When you own a APBT, you feel a little different than the general public about the things that are happening to the breed.

AKA I love you and your admiration for the breed. Don't you ever feel bad for speaking your mind!!

I did say that the dogs should have been evaluated. Evaluations can't say for sure how a dog would do in a home environment and you are correct about that. However, it can give people a good idea of what would be required to get the dog ready to be placed.

There are lots and lots of pits out there that need homes. I'd prefer to see two pits in homes vs every one that has to go through extensive rehab to be placed. I'm not saying that fighting dogs don't deserve a chance but if they show signs of agression why not rescue the family pitbull in the kennel next to them that doesn't have an existing agression issue???? There are SO Many Pitties in shelters these days that I bet they will soon outnumber the black labs! It's sad that so many that get this breed don't understand what it takes to be a responsible dog owner. It's definitely a breed that seems to attract bad dog owners and that is unfortunate!

I'm glad you are out there with Maddie to set a good example for others in our community! If even one person learns from your example - than you have made an impact on this world.

I must say that although I disapproved of Best Friends taking on the VICK dogs, in the end I am glad they did. I think that it's given the breed a lot of Positive PR and showed this country a lot about how wonderful this breed can be!! I hope that some of the people watching have changed their mind about Pit Bulls and their generalizations about the breed being aggressive. Best Friends has done a fabulous job with rehabilitating these dogs and they have done so in the limelight. The positive PR alone has had to be good for all those Pit Bulls out there who are in jeopardy of being banned by their community. Maybe next time people see a Pit Bull they will think of the Vick Dogs that are now therapy dogs and have turned out to be so wonderful....Maybe, just maybe, they will squat down to say hello rather than turn away in fear.
